It's ALL ABOUT
EXPECTATIONS
So, is it a wine lesson?
No. We call it an "experience" because it's not a lesson. The role of your host is not limited to presenting or explaining the wine as a sommelier in a restaurant. It's an interactive evening. The goal is to have fun and enjoy the wines. Which is, by the way, also the best way to learn something about it.
What level of wine expertise is required to enjoy the tasting?
The "Classic Experience" can be enjoyed by anyone with a passing interest in wine. We expect guests to actively participate in the event and to take part in the group activities, but these do not require any previous education in wine. We avoid snobbery and lingo. If you are a wine enthusiast or expert, we promise you'll appreciate the Experience as an unusual and engaging tasting session. The "Aficionado" and "Mamma Mia" events are designed for groups of people with different levels of interest in wine. The main difference is mostly in the quality (and price) of wines selected, which deserve some extra time and attention to be fully appreciated.
Which wines will we taste?
We taste the wines blind, so you won't know the line-up in advance. But here are some indications of what you can expect. One of our goals is to introduce you to your new favourite wine. So we choose wines that represent a benchmark and express the typical aromas and flavours of the grape, the region or the winemaking style. We avoid extremes. We won't serve supermarket brands, but you won't get quirky experimental bottles you're unlikely to find again for sale on Earth.
We choose wines from top winemakers that you'll be able to order from a good online site and that you'll often find in a wine list of a fine dining restaurant. Bottles worth taking note of and buying again.
In terms of regions, expect to taste wine from the Old World. Which means mostly France, Italy and Spain, with the occasional wine from Portugal, Germany, Austria, Greece or Hungary. Sometimes we have a wine from Malta, but the tasting is never limited to Maltese wines. Usually we'll serve one sparkling wine, two still white wines, two reds and a sweet or fortified wine.
What does it mean to taste the wines blind?
Ok, it doesn't mean that you'll be blindfolded. Tasting blind means that bottles are covered with a numbered bottle sock, and tasters don't know what wine it is. As such, your tasting will not influenced by labels and what you may know about a certain wine. The wines are revealed at the end of the tasting.
Is it all about guessing the wine is in the glass?
Guessing is fun, but identifying grape varieties, countries, vintages and appelations blind is hard even for sommeliers with experience and practice, so it's not what we do during the Classic Experience. The Experience is a discovery journey accessible to everyone, focused on paying attention to all of the senses while we taste great wine.
Do we drink or spit? Will I get drunk if I don't spit?
Your choice. We provide spittoons for those who prefer to stay sober. If you drink, just note that the total of wine served during the experience will be at least six tasting pours. You may feel tipsy, and over the Maltese limit for driving. So, plan accordingly!
What's the etiquette for a wine tasting event?
Our tastings are informal and relaxed. Everyone is welcome. We just ask our guests to refrain from showering in strong perfume before the event, or you'll all smell the Dior Fahrenheit of the person sitting next to you instead of the pinot noir in the glass
Why is the experience so expensive? I can get some wines by the glass in a bar for the same price.
We kindly ask you to see it the other way around: you can get a memorable and immersive wine experience at the same price of a few random glasses in a bar.
